Wiener Fiakerlied can be heard on the web in several versions; for example, the one that was recorded by Paul Hörbiger in 1936. This recording may be from the soundtrack of the movie Fiakerlied (1936) in which Hörbiger starred as a Viennese cab driver in the 1880s. The movie was produced by his own company. (2)
The German lyrics for all eight verses and the refrain can be found on the Wiener Volksliedwerk (Vienna Folk Song Institute) web site. (3)
An English translation was published in 1886 in Weekly Vienna News, an English-language magazine published in Vienna, to accompany an article on Viennese cab drivers. The first verse was reprinted in the Illustrierte Wiener Extrablatt and elsewhere. (4)
A second English translation can be found in the booklet accompanying the 2002 CD-ROM entitled Dancing on the Edge of a Volcano produced by the New Budapest Orpheum Society. The booklet includes only three of the eight verses (verses 1, 3 and 8 plus the refrains), opting to convey the humour, spirit and music of the original rather than a literal translation. (5)
